SUMMARY

When I first started writing about my experiences with my son, Ryan and his difficulties, it was after he was “escorted” against his will, from my home near Columbus, Ohio, to a disciplinary boarding school in Keokuk, Iowa, back in 2005, when he had just turned 17 years old. This was where the title of the book came from. At that time, based upon what I was seeing in his progress in that program (which lasted nearly a year), I was hopeful that his experiences there would “straighten him out” so to speak, and that he would return a new person. When he returned from the boarding school in 2006 on his 18th birthday, it was with the hope (on both our parts), that the problems were over, and that he would go on to live a productive life with college, a job, and maybe a family in his future. He seemed so changed by the experience that I was overcome with wishful thinking. Not long after this date in 2006, at least based upon the story I was later told, is when he experimented with heroin for the first time. What is described in the following pages could be described as a parent and child’s worst nightmare.

Back then, before I learned all the things I learned, I started writing this as a way to help other parents and their kids learn from my mistakes and education through hard knocks. I thought I had learned why some of these things had happened and could advise others on how to avoid our plight. So, I left the first part of this as I wrote it then, so the reader can see the metamorphosis I went through in learning about addiction, its causes and cures. What I have learned since is what they call I these programs the “3 C’s :You didn’t cause it; you can’t control it; and you can’t cure it! What you can do is learn to cope with it so it doesn’t ruin your life as well
