SUMMARY

An autobiography tracing the innocence, joy, and ultimate disillusionment of a coal miner’s son from West Virginia, who witnesses what he believes to be his country’s gradual slide toward moral and cultural decline. His journey carries him from the coal fields to military service and into the highest levels of academia. The book chronicles the life of a lean, determined, and hardworking Appalachian youth—deeply devoted to his family, his heritage, and his belief in the fundamental goodness of the United States. In many ways, it is a rags-to-riches story, rising from the stark realities of coal country to becoming a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force and earning a Ph.D. from a prestigious university. Along the way, he discovers both a profound appreciation for his nation and a growing sense of loss as he observes the erosion of the values and culture that once shaped his world.
